Mast Man

Hi there, this is Sandwoman. While I might be able to sand teak till the cows come home, my nemesis is heights. Enter Mast Man. He is able to climb masts with only one or two stops to catch his breath. He can accomplish three tasks in one climb (route a burgee halyard, route the staysail halyard and remove the staysail stay). And he does it all with a smile. He is my hero!!!

  1. My wife and I live in Madison and are considering getting a ComPac 23/3. I couldn't figure out how to contact you, except through the comments. I'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts on how this boat worked for Madison lakes, where you launched (Marshall Park, I think), whether the channel at Skipper Bud's is deep enough for the 2'3" draft, where you ran aground, and what you do with a dinghy when you anchor near the Union.

Thanks for all the writing about your experiences and good luck on your future cruising.

  2. Thanks Mark. We loved our Com-Pac 23. It sailed great especially with new sails on it. The shallow keel is fine for the channel back to Skipper Buds. We ran aground in this channel after they pulled the channel markers for the fall. Just use your GPS with waypoints entered for the channel if you want to sail in the late fall. The 23 is a beautiful design that ALWAYS received attention wherever we rigged or sailed her.
Marshall Park is the only launch I would use for a 23. There are some really nice docks available at the Union and the Edgewater Restaurant. They have removed the little boat ramp next to the Union which we used to use for our dinghy landings. You can dinghy up to the Union docks and tie off to them as an alternative.

  3. Thanks for your response. I've been to those docks on a powerboat, but I've never seen a sailboat docked there. It might be a tricky docking, as winds generally are coming across the lake into those docks. What dinghy did you use? The boat we are thinking about getting won't be coming with one. I was considering the ComPac, a Seaward 25 or a Precision 23. You may have pushed us over the edge. Thanks. I can't wait to be preparing for a longer trip like you are. We are still 5 to 10 years from being able to do that.
